Laila est une jeune fille romantique, un peu rebelle. Elle est étudiante et compose de la musique pour un groupe rock de son université de New Delhi. Elle cherche à vivre comme les autres jeunes de sa génération, malgré son handicap qui l'oblige à se déplacer en fauteuil roulant. Elle est à l'âge où l'on est toujours à la recherche de plus de liberté et de nouvelles expériences. Elle aspire à vivre pleinement malgré le regard que les autres portent sur elle. Elle veut découvrir le monde et obtient d'aller poursuivre ses études à l'Université de New York. En compagnie de sa mère, elle quitte New Delhi pour New York. Elle y fait la connaissance de Khanum, une jeune femme militante, avec qui elle va s'épanouir. Ce séjour américain va lui permettre, entre autres, de découvrir sa sexualité.
